Sandra Stringer

1999 Winner of the Brian Law Opera Scholarship Competition

From the program notes to the Reception with Gerald Finley, held 21 September 2006:

Mezzo-soprano Sandra Stringer is a recent graduate of the Doctor of Musical Arts program at the University of British Columbia. A native of Ottawa, Sandra was an Associate Artist with Opera Lyra Ottawa for two years prior to her arrival in Vancouver. She appeared in several of their productions, most notably Aida, Die Fledermaus, and Madama Butterfly. Sandra has been engaged as a guest soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Thirteen Strings, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

As a member of the UBC Opera Ensemble she has sung many roles including Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, Meg Page in Nicholai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, Elizabeth Proctor in Robert Ward’s The Crucible and Dido in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. Sandra has also participated in several UBC Opera Ensemble tours to Germany and the Czech Republic, where she sang several roles including Prince Orlofsky in Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, the Fox in The Cunning Little Vixen, and Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte. Sandra may also be heard on the UBC Symphony recording of Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius.

Sandra’s recent accomplishments include her Vancouver Opera debut in the role of Flora in the 2004 production of La Traviata, the creation and performance of a production of Poulenc’s La Voix humaine in 2005, and her engagement in The Opera Project’s 2006 production of Cosi fan tutte as Dorabella. Next season, Sandra will appear in Vancouver Opera’s new production of Die Zauberflöte as Second Lady.
